12/8/17: Tonya Harding - Sufjan Stevens

ARIGO MUSIC'S DAILY SONG SUGGESTION

Who needs Spotify, Apple Music, or Pandora? Well we all do, but here's OUR song suggestion of the day:

Tonya Harding - Sufjan Stevens

Buy/listen here: http://smarturl.it/tonya-harding Lyrics: Tonya Harding, my star Well this world is a cold one But it takes one to know one And God only knows what you are Just some Portland white trash You confronted your sorrow Like there was no tomorrow While the rest of the world only laughed Triple axel on high A delightful disaster You jumped farther and faster You were always so full of surprises Are your laces untied?

Sufjan Stevens has released two versions of a tribute song to Tonya Harding, which were submitted for the biopic I, Tonya, but not used. As seen in the video above, the version in D major syncs with her routine in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 1991. Stevens details his interest in Harding since watching this routine and his struggle to encapsulate her American heroism in a song. The first American woman to perform a triple axle in an international competition, he calls her "a reality TV star before such a thing even existed." He adds, "She fought classism, sexism, physical abuse and public rebuke to become an incomparable American legend."

As a Youtube commenter points out, the above video is like a mini-biopic in it of itself. We hope you enjoy Stevens' musical tale of Tonya Harding, and listen to both versions below.
